The 23rd annual meeting of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL) was held in Singapore, the Lion City, well-known as one of the greenest and safest cities in the world, this year. First taking place in this island nation in 1978, after 35 years, APASL returned to its first home. APASL now is the largest Liver Conference in the Asia Pacific region, consisting of many countries in the region such as China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Philippines, New Zealand, Singapore, etc. The annual meeting has become the place for the exchange of scientific information and research in hepatology, contributing to the promotion of the latest scientific advancement for both researchers and clinicians.

The conference theme this year was "Transforming science to clinical practice” gathering nearly 5000 visitors worldwide. According to the President of the Association, Dr. Seng Gee Lim from Singapore, the highlights of this Conference were their post graduate courses including Research Methodology Workshop, the Basic Science Postgraduate Course and the Clinical Postgraduate course. With theme "Translational Research 101" at Research Methodology Workshop, Professor Woong Kim Ray from the U.S. and Dr. Dan Yock Young from Singapore had a discussion about the technique used in the study of genes, proteins and micro RNAs. In charge of thematic syllabus for the Basic Science Postgraduate courses with subject “From Pathogenesis to Therapy of Viral Hepatitis", Professor Antonio Bertoletti and Stephen Locarnini from Singapore delivered a speech of the mechanism of liver damage and the interaction between the virus and the immune factors in hepatitis B and C. For The Clinical Postgraduate Course on "Clinical  Challenges in Liver Fibrosis”, the group of Professor Teerha Piratvisuth from Thailand and Chow Wan Cheng from Singapore addressed the diagnosis, treatment, control and recurrence of liver cirrhosis. During the opening day, most of the Clinical Workshops covered Triple Therapy topic for Genotype1 Hepatitis C Virus Infection. In particular, there was the presentation of No-Interferon-free method for the treatment of Hepatitis C, epidemiological study of NASH (Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis) and the reversibility of liver fibrosis.
Joining APASL this year, Vietnam has two research posters. One is from a group of Dr. Le Hoa Pham from University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City and Dr. Hop Trong Bui from 115 Hospital with title "The Cut-off Value of IgM-antiHBc in Differential Diagnosis of Acute Hepatitis B and Exacerbation of Chronic Hepatitis B". The second research poster is from Dr.  Thi Thu Thuy Pham and Dr. Dat Tan Ho from Medic Medical Center, Ho Chi Minh City, named “Impact of Single Nucleotide Polymorphism of IL28B on SVR in Treatment Chronic Hepatitis C Genotype 6 in Vietnamese Patients".

Annual APASL is also the place for exhibiting outstanding achievements in the field of medical diagnosis and treatments of liver diseases. Among 30 booths of many large multinational corporations such as MSD, Hoffman La Roche, GSK, and BMS, Nanogen Biopharmaceutical Company is the only representative of Vietnam participated. This is the third time in a row Nanogen has attended the exhibition at this annual Conference. Nanogen introduced to international friends the achievements in the field of biotechnology and pharmacy in Vietnam through our five main products. Pegnano and Feronsure are used to treat hepatitis B, C; Nanokine are for the treatment of anemia caused by kidney failure; Pegcyte and Ficocyte help to reduce neutropenia in patients treated with cytotoxic chemotherapy for malignancy. Our booth attracted the interest of scientists, clinicians from other countries due to effectiveness, as well as reasonable prices of our products. As part of Vietnam’s medical industry, this is something that we, Nanogen, are proud of.

In this 23rd Conference, the International Research Organization on Liver disease in Beijing is the first organization in Asia especially inviting Leading experts to Liver Hospital of Beijing Navy to conduct consultations for severe liver-disease cases in the community. Patients were able to apply for appointments with the professionals online. Besides that, there was also financial aid policy for patients.
