The metabolism of glucose is an energy source for the body.
Glucose is a monosaccharide with six carbons, which is given by mouth or by intravenous infusion in the treatment of carbohydrate and fluid depletion. It is the preferred source of carbohydrate in parenteral nutrition regimens and is used in oral rehydration solutions for the prevention and treatment of dehydration due to acute diarrheal diseases. Glucose is also used in the treatment of hypoglycemia. Glucose is given orally in the glucose tolerance test as a diagnostic aid. Glucose solutions are also used as vehicles for other drugs. Solutions of glucose in water are iso-osmotic with blood at a concentration of anhydrous glucose 5.05% or glucose monohydrate 5.51%. Glucose solution 5% is therefore the strength often employed for fluid depletion; it may be given via a peripheral vein. Glucose solutions with a concentration greater than 5% are hyperosmotic and are generally used as a carbohydrate source; a 50% solution is often used in the treatment of severe hypoglycemia.
Glucose is rapidly metabolized into carbon dioxide and water.
Through oral route, glucose is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations of glucose occur about forty minutes after oral doses in hypoglycemic patients. It is metabolized via pyruvic or lactic acid to carbon dioxide and water with the release of energy.
